| "Instigate
Unity" Unity: The state of being one;
absence of diversity
Challenge: In the coming week and months you will
make it your personal goal to do everything that you can as an
individual to instigate unity within this body.
Instigate: To cause by incitement; to incite by some
type of action.
What would it mean for you on a personal level?
What kinds of things would you need to do?
What kinds of things would you need to NOT do?
Things to consider in order to investigate unity
within the body?
-
Where are we at right now?
-
What are the potential dangers to
avoid?
-
The biggest has to do with your tongue.
-
James 3:1-12 - 1Not many of you should
presume to be teachers, my brothers, because you know that we
who teach will be judged more strictly. 2We all stumble in many
ways. If anyone is never at fault in what he says, he is a
perfect man, able to keep his whole body in check. 3When we put
bits into the mouths of horses to make them obey us, we can turn
the whole animal. 4Or take ships as an example. Although they
are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are steered by
a very small rudder wherever the pilot wants to go. 5Likewise
the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great
boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small
spark. 6The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the
parts of the body. It corrupts the whole person, sets the whole
course of his life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell.
7All kinds of animals, birds, reptiles and creatures of the sea
are being tamed and have been tamed by man, 8but no man can tame
the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. 9With
the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse
men, who have been made in God's likeness. 10Out of the same
mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers, this should not be.
11Can both fresh water and salt water flow from the same spring?
12My brothers, can a fig tree bear olives, or a grapevine bear
figs? Neither can a salt spring produce fresh water.
-
Jude 1:14-16; 20-23 - Enoch, the seventh from
Adam, prophesied about these men: "See, the Lord is coming with
thousands upon thousands of his holy ones 15to judge everyone,
and to convict all the ungodly of all the ungodly acts they have
done in the ungodly way, and of all the harsh words ungodly
sinners have spoken against him." 16These men are grumblers and
faultfinders; they follow their own evil desires; they boast
about themselves and flatter others for their own advantage.
20But you, dear friends, build yourselves up in your most holy
faith and pray in the Holy Spirit. 21Keep yourselves in God's
love as you wait for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to bring
you to eternal life. 22Be merciful to those who doubt; 23snatch
others from the fire and save them; to others show mercy, mixed
with fear—hating even the clothing stained by corrupted flesh.
-
What is our calling?
-
Matthew 28:19-20 (The Great
Commission) 19Therefore go and make disciples of all nations,
baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of
the Holy Spirit, 20and teaching them to obey everything I have
commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end
of the age."
-
Where do we go from here?
-
1 Peter 2:1-8 - 1Therefore, rid yourselves of
all malice and all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander of every
kind. 2Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that
by it you may grow up in your salvation, 3now that you have
tasted that the Lord is good. 4As you come to him, the living
Stone—rejected by men but chosen by God and precious to him—
5you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual
house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices
acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. 6For in Scripture it
says: "See, I lay a stone in Zion, a chosen and precious
cornerstone, and the one who trusts in him will never be put to
shame." 7Now to you who believe, this stone is precious. But to
those who do not believe, "The stone the builders rejected has
become the capstone," 8and, "A stone that causes men to stumble
and a rock that makes them fall." They stumble because they
disobey the message—which is also what they were destined for.
Live as strangers to the rest of the world by:
-
Making sure you are instigating unity through your
words and actions.
-
Joining the staff in humble prayer for this
interim period and our next pastor.
-
Avoid getting involved with those that choose to
be negative grumblers and fault-finders.
-
Getting involved!!!
